Pannexins after stroke
نویسنده
چکیده
L-type calcium channel (LTCC) function is critical for electrical and cellular signaling in a diverse range of cell types. In cardiac muscle LTCC function (I Ca,L) provides trigger Ca 2+ for Ca2+-induced Ca release, and ICa,L kinetics is a critical determinant of action potential duration.1 LTCC blockade is an effective antihypertensive regimen, likely owing to contributions of ICa,L in vascular smooth muscle for maintenance of vasotone. Cardiac and vascular smooth muscle finely grade function. In part, precise regulation of ICa,L contributes to such graded contraction. Channels News & Views

Connexins and pannexins in liver damage
Connexins and pannexins are key players in the control of cellular communication and thus in the maintenance of tissue homeostasis. Inherent to this function these proteins are frequently involved in pathological processes. The present paper reviews the role of connexins and pannexins in liver toxicity and disease. As they act both as sensors and effectors in these deleterious events connexins ...
متن کاملPannexin-1 as a potentiator of ligand-gated receptor signaling
Pannexins are a class of plasma membrane spanning proteins that presumably form a hexameric, non-selective ion channel. Although similar in secondary structure to the connexins, pannexins notably do not form endogenous gap junctions and act as bona fide ion channels. The pannexins have been primarily studied as ATP-release channels, but the overall diversity of their functions is still being el...
متن کاملThe role of pannexin hemichannels in inflammation and regeneration
Tissue injury involves coordinated systemic responses including inflammatory response, targeted cell migration, cell-cell communication, stem cell activation and proliferation, and tissue inflammation and regeneration. The inflammatory response is an important prerequisite for regeneration. Multiple studies suggest that extensive cell-cell communication during tissue regeneration is coordinated...
متن کاملWhat is hidden in the pannexin treasure trove: the sneak peek and the guesswork
Connexins had been considered to be the only class of the vertebrate proteins capable of gap junction formation; however, new candidates for this function with no homology to connexins, termed pannexins were discovered. So far three pannexins were described in rodent and human genomes: Panx1, Panx2 and Panx3. Expressions of pannexins can be detected in numerous brain structures, and now found b...
متن کاملPannexins, a family of gap junction proteins expressed in brain.
Database search has led to the identification of a family of proteins, the pannexins, which share some structural features with the gap junction forming proteins of invertebrates and vertebrates. The function of these proteins has remained unclear so far. To test the possibility that pannexins underlie electrical communication in the brain, we have investigated their tissue distribution and fun...
